Austin || food trucks
So many trucks, so little time, and there is only so much we can eat in 3 days. There truly is an insane number of food trucks in Austin considering the size of the population, with so many options it is hard to narrow down the list. Here are the trailers that we got to stop and sample during our recent visit [we likely would’ve eaten more if the temps weren’t over 100*F in the shade]:
East Side King
Found out the back of a dive bar on 6th street, right next to the port-a-loos and skungy picnic tables all making for a suitably suspect street dining experience. The food however is fantastic. We were hungry when we arrived at this location and ordered up big: Poor Qui’s Buns – roasted pork belly in steamed buns, Hoisin sauce, cucumber kimchee and green onion; Beet Home Fries – deep fried roasted beets, kewpie mayo, schichimi tougarashi and green onion; Fried Brussels Sprout Salad – fried Brussels sprouts, sweet & spicy sauce, fresh shredded cabbage, alfalfa sprouts, fresh basil, cilantro, mint, onion, and jalapeño; and last but not least the Tongue Buns – roasted beef tongue in steamed buns, home-made peanut butter curry, fresh basil, cilantro, mint, onion, and jalapeño. OMG peeps everything was fantastic. The tongue buns were surprising moist protein goodness wrapped in a pillowy bun dripping in peanut sauce. The fried beets are not to be over looked either. We loved every bite.
Odd Duck – Farm to Trailer
This team have opened a restaurant down the road called Barley Swine, as an indication as to how well they are doing. Lines form to the left, and they frequently sell out. They are located in a hot sweaty cat litter box, but that doesn’t deter the BYOB crowds from gathering. We scored once again with this pick. The focus is on supporting local farms and showcasing seasonal produce. The wait was about 20 minutes from the time we ordered, as it is made to order, that left us enough time to hit the gas station for some beers. The food arrives hot and you can taste the quality of the farmers hard toil. The pork belly sliders were a hit, but we really loved the parmesan grits with duck egg, grilled squash and mushrooms and the whole quail with texas caviar and tomato.
Doughy goodness from top to bottom and man are they HUGE. Don’t be fooled they don’t stop at sweet offerings, they do a fried chicken doughnut to boot, I almost had to be held back from snatching up a women’s order. The options are extensive and we only wish we had more time to try more of their concoctions. A yes yes and another YES to this food truck stop.
Ms. P’s Electric Cock
Ms. P has it going on in the fried chicken department. My last meal on earth will always be fried chicken [maybe slathered in pate] and I think I want to get some from here. The three-step process ensures that flavor penetrates the chicken and makes every bite delicious and succulent. We were offered up a waffle option for a $1.00 extra, I am glad we agreed to it, crunchiness so delicious, like we had never had with a waffle before. Lip smackin’ good.
La Boite Cafe
This location is a shipping container vs. an actual truck. Great little spot to stop for baked goods and coffee. The salted caramel macaron was one of the best we have ever eaten.
